Photography and me

I bought my very first camera with the wages from the very first job I ever had I was working as a checkout assistant at a supermarket called Kwik Save which has now closed down, it was back when Jessops had a store on the high street, I had been in a number of times and picked out exactly what I wanted, looked at various articles online to make sure that what I was getting was the best I could afford and started saving, I literally saved all of my wages and bought it within a few months, I was hooked, taking pictures of local landscapes, family members and just things around the house, a few years later I decided to sell that very camera along with all of the equipment that I had collected to go with it, looking back it was a massive mistake, I got very little money for it and lost all of the equipment that I had collected to go with it.

I was diagnosed with generalised anxiety around 2009, to try and help me get a handle on it I decided to get back into photography, I researched the equipment available and set my sights on a Nikon D3100, it seemed perfect for what I wanted and the reviews backed it up, Christmas of that year my parents bought me that very camera it was amazing, using it mainly in auto I started photographing everything, places I had been, items around the house just trying to learn more and more about this art form, I was hooked. The photo below was one of the first photos that I took with that camera using the kit 18-55mm lens circa April 2013.

I took so many photos, just trying to push myself further and further all the time;

A few years passed and my friends started getting married, my love of photography wasn’t a secret, I was shouting it from the rooftops and was asked to photograph a few of these weddings, not something I had done before so I was really conscious that maybe I wasn’t good enough or my skill level wasn’t going to deliver what the couple wanted. On the days leading up to the weddings, I hired a Nikon 70-200mm lens, one of the most amazing bits of glass I have ever used and captured some amazing photographs.

After a few weddings, I found a local music festival called GigFest, it runs over three days in July of each year in the garden of a pub in town, I sent the organiser a message asking if it would be ok to bring my camera as I wasn’t sure if they had an official photographer already covering the event, they said it was ok and I turned up really quite nervous and took a few photos, I walked away with some really good photos, in my head I had a vision of how I wanted the photos to look, I didn’t want them to look over lit or artificially lit, after that event I have attended more and more local gigs, made some amazing friends with bands and have recently been asked if I would be the official photographer for one of them, which for me is huge.

The rest is history, as they say. Photography has been there for me, it has given me something I could never replace, it has given me amazing new friends and has allowed me to capture some amazing memories.

Today’s Bedroom Project

This weekend I had a project that I wanted to complete, in my wardrobe unit there is a cupboard that had some shelves where I could put bits and pieces the problem was there wasn’t enough shelves for the things I wanted to keep in there – additionally I had been keeping my phone on charge with my watch next to my bed and I wanted to move these somewhere else.

The other part of the project was this blank wall that I had, when I first moved into the room I put pictures on the wall with Blue Tac (don’t do this) and it left horrible marks where the pictures had been, I wanted to give the room a new lease of life.

This is the cupboard there are two shelves and the very bottom has my files, I planned to add two more shelves to give me a little more space in here.

After I had cut the wood that I wanted to use for the shelves I decided to fix a 4 gang plug socket to the underside of one of the shelves which would be the top shelf, I could then run my cables from their plugs to the top side of shelf and keep everything tidy (well that is the plan)

I took a quick photo of the inside of the plug so I knew how to put it back together when I had finished feeding it through the unit out to the plug socket on the wall.

This is how the charging shelf turned out, there is my iPhone charger, Apple Watch Charger and Nikon Charger with one spare power outlet which I decided to use for my Sonos, which is now sitting on top of the wardrobe.

I fed the cable from the charging shelf through the top of the unit out to the Sonos on top of the wardrobe.

This is how the cupboard turned out when I had finished, two additional shelves and a place to store my chargeable items overnight.

My room also now has a new lease of life with some new bedding and a tapestry on the wall, looks pretty good I think, just need to find some new curtains and lampshade and it will be complete.

I added a few other little finishing bits today, swapped out the bedside lamp for a new one

Looks quite nice in the dark I think…

Penny Vs Liquids – Science Fair 2017

Next week (wb 13th Feb) is science week at Ruby’s school and the theme this year is change. Last year she asked if she could take part in the science fair but by the time we found out it was too late to do an experiment and write it up however this year we had plenty of time to plan something and create a science fair presentation, we sat down and had a think about what we could do, we decided on finding out how a copper coin is affected by different liquids.

We didn’t have any of the “Materials” that we needed in the house so we went to the shop to collect what we needed, for this experiment we needed the following;

  • Lemon Juice
  • Diet Coke
  • Classic Coke
  • Water
  • Vinegar
  • Clear Cups (we selected clear so we could watch what was happening)

We got all of the cups set out on the counter and labelled them with a post-it note so that Ruby knew which liquid was in which cup, we placed each of the coins on the note and took a picture, this was mainly for evidence so we could show how the coin had changed over the course of the experiment.

Ruby put all of the coins into the liquids and she decided that she was going to leave them for 5 days before removing them from the liquid and seeing what had happened.

We then needed to make a presentation board so that she could show her findings at the fair, we got some mount board from The Range and some coloured card to back the headings, we set the board out to show the question (what she wanted to find out) her thoughts (what she thought was going to be the outcome) what she did (the steps she took to get to the outcome) and what happened (to show what actually happened to each coin in it’s respective liquid)

The experiment is ongoing and we don’t have the results yet, but as soon as we do Ruby is going to update her presentation which will be perfect timing for the fair.

Quorn Fillets

If you read my post from early last week you will know that I picked up a bunch of the Quorn vegan range to try and I said that I would let you know my thoughts, so the Quorn Fillets…what were they like?

To be honest, these were by far the worst of the bunch that we purchased, I am not sure what I expected but they were really disappointing, they felt really processed and the outside of the fillet looked unappealing, as for the taste well there was no taste, they had to be complimented with something else to give them any flavour, I don’t know if that was the intention that Quorn had when they made them but for me I would have preferred to just have a fillet I could eat with some rice and that be enough. So unfortunately I won’t be buying these again and can’t really recommend them to you all.

Quorn Fishless Fingers

If you read my post from early last week you will know that I picked up a bunch of the Quorn vegan range to try and I said that I would let you know my thoughts, so the Quorn Fishless Finger…what were they like?

These had the biggest hype for me, so many people have been talking about them, saying just how good they were so I was really excited to try them out, just like the nuggets the texture on the outside was identical to a Fish Finger but what about the inside? Some of the Quorn products can be really dense and not very appealing at all but these Fishless fingers were perfect, they tasted amazing the contents of the Finger tasted really good, definitely on my list of products to get again and would recommend them to anyone looking for a Vegan alternative.

Arbonne Moisturizer

I got out of the shower, dried my face pulled the toothbrush from its holder and started to brush my teeth, as I gazed into the mirror I noticed that the top of my head was flaky, I hadn’t noticed it before and had no idea what might be causing it or how to even remedy it, after a little bit of searching both on the usual google searches and a few groups I am a member of on Facebook it seemed to point to the lack of moisturisation, I didn’t even think that I needed to use a moisturiser.

Coincidentally a friend at work had been promoting his wife (Lucy) new venture with Arbonne, I had looked into the products before but there were just so many I ended up walking away, however, I sent Lucy a message explaining the situation with my skin, what products I was using now* and asked if she could she recommend something that would help alleviate the problem, a few days later I had two packs of products to try, she has also sent me a number of messages on Facebook explaining the products and how best to use them, as I am only really looking for a moisturiser at the moment I decided to put most of the products aside and give FC5 a try.

Here are my thoughts;

Day One

I stopped using the Lush Cosmetic Lad and started using Arbonne FC5 you only need a really small amount, pea sized or in the case of the FC5 one pump of the applicator. As I have a beard I applied it to my forehead and exposed skin areas on my cheeks and nose, I rubbed the product into my face and let it soak in. I have to say my face feels extremely soft even after one application.

Day Two

So today I woke up, had a shower, dried my face and looked into the mirror to see if there was any change to my skin to my surprise the majority of the dry skin had gone, I am not just saying that because I want this product to work but it really had gone. My face felt extremely soft and looked healthy, I am quite impressed with how quickly I am seeing results with this.

Day Three

Today was pretty much the same as yesterday, soft skin hydrated and no dry skin, tomorrow is the last day of the trial so I will give you my conclusion.

Day Four

Today was the last day of the trial, I have used nothing else on my face except FC5 from Arbonne and the dry skin I had on my forehead has totally gone, my face isn’t oily and my skin looks healthy.

In conclusion, the FC5 from Arbonne is a fantastic product, it has totally replaced what I was using as my daily face cream if you are looking for a lightweight moisturiser that has no fillers, no extra ingredients and is totally vegan this is definitely one of the products to check out.

*Before using Arbonne I was using Lush Cosmetic Lad but unfortunately it isn’t vegan.
